Photography Program

Visual communication is extremely important in today’s world. Professional photographers are needed to capture, create, process, and share images, and the College of DuPage Photography Program is ready to train them for their career in this rapidly evolving profession. Demand for photographers with the latest technological skills is increasing and will continue to do so.

Photography faculty are all practicing professional photographers that share a real-world perspective with our students. We teach everything from basic skills and workflow to advanced digital imaging, printing and business practices, and portfolio preparation. We incorporate guest speakers, location shoots, community service projects, and gallery shows into our curriculum so our students are well-prepared with a broad knowledge of photographic practice. We celebrate and launch our advanced students into the business community with our annual Exposed Photography Showcase.

The photography teaching facilities at the College of DuPage are among the finest in the country. Our computer labs feature high-end Apple computers, professional printers and scanners and the latest Adobe software for digital imaging. The darkrooms are fully equipped, with separate areas for processing and printing black and white silver prints. Our photo studios are available to students enrolled in in lighting and portraiture classes and are equipped with high end Profoto lighting gear. Students may also check out digital and film cameras and flashes, as well as tripods and other lighting accessories.

Graduates of the Photography Degree or Certificate Programs find employment opportunities in a variety of jobs in the photographic industry, including portraiture, event coverage, as documentary/photojournalists, as location scouts, as in-house photographers for start-up companies, digital assistants, and photo assistants. They also become entrepreneurs creating advertising, corporate and editorial images for their clients. Many of our students have become fine artists and display and sell their work in galleries and at art fairs.

Some students choose to continue their photographic education with a Bachelor’s Degree. COD has Articulation Agreements with Columbia College Chicago, Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara California, and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) all respected photography schools.
